Water heaters can have a number of problems, especially if you do not keep up with maintenance:

• Sediment build-up: This is easily avoidable if you flush the tank regularly. Extra sediment can cause your water heater to function less effectively. Loud noises coming from your water heater may be a sign of mineral build-up.
• Thermostat malfunction: If the thermostat doesn’t work, your water heater will not be able to gauge how hot the water is. This may result in water that is too hot or water that doesn’t get hot enough.

• Leaks: If there’s a crack, hole, or other physical damage to your water heater, the tank may leak. Loose connections can also cause leaks. 

• Faulty heating element: This could be a problem with the actual heating element, or, if you have an electric water heater, it could be a problem with the power connection.
